Chestnut

A starchy, low-fat tree nut traditionally grown as a long-term food crop.

Naturally low in fat and traditionally enjoyed cooked in both savoury and sweet dishes.

About the Crop

Chestnuts are valued as a food for the way they provide energy and nourishment without the heaviness of high-fat nuts. They are naturally rich in complex carbohydrates and fibre, and supply potassium, vitamin C, and B vitamins, making them filling, sustaining, and easy to incorporate into everyday meals.

They are widely eaten in Europe, East Asia, and the Mediterranean, where chestnuts are treated as a staple food rather than a specialty ingredient. Their mild flavour and gentle natural sweetness allow them to work comfortably in both savoury and sweet cooking.

Chestnuts are eaten cooked. They can be roasted, boiled, or steamed, added to soups and grain dishes, puréed, or ground into flour for baking. Their soft, dense texture makes them well suited as both a base ingredient and an alternative to other starches.

At Xander Farms, chestnuts are grown as part of a diversified, long-term orchard crop. They offer a practical, versatile food and expand the range of organic products we are able to grow and offer.r.
